Dental flossing is just as important as brushing one’s teeth. Many people take this for granted thinking that brushing their teeth is enough. They are not aware that brushing alone only gets the job half done. There are many places that a toothbrush cannot clean such as the in between your teeth. The toothbrush’ bristle could only reach certain areas but not only and this is why all dentists recommend that we floss even after we have brushed after every meal.

These days with so many companies making dental floss and they all advertise that their product is the best of all, people get confused as what to buy. What are the kinds of dental floss? There are two kinds of floss actually. That would be the multifilament floss and the monofilament floss. The most common that you can find in supermarkets or stores is the multifilament floss. This is normally made of nylon or silk floss. The monofilament floss is usually made of a type of rubber, plastic or perhaps polytetrafluoroethylene. This type of floss costs more than the multifilament because it does not tear easily and much easier to use.

Both types of floss come in so many flavors like mint, bubblegum, etc. You name it and they have most of it. Also, these two types of floss also come in different thicknesses. We have to keep in mind that although most of us think we are created equal and the same think again. We are not. With regards to teeth spacing, some of us have small spaces in between teeth and some of us have teeth that are just spaced farther apart compared to others. So, the thickness will have to depend on your teeth’s spacing. The multifilament floss also comes in waxed or un-waxed kind. However, there is no clinical finding that one is better than the other.

So, with all of these to choose from, which one should you buy? Buy whatever floss that you are going to actually use. Flossing is like brushing one’s teeth. You need to be comfortable with the kind of toothbrush that you use. You cannot use floss that you are not comfortable with, so try the different kinds and buy the kind that you will use.

It is recommended to brush teeth for 3 minutes 3 times a day.  A lot of people do it 3 times a day after their main meals. However twice a day is the best frequency as brushing more can damage the surface of the teeth.

3. Tooth extraction affects eyesight

This is a myth. However, it is surprising that a lot of people believe this to be true. Everybody should know that there is absolutely no kind of effect whatsoever to the eyesight if one has a tooth extraction. You may visit your trusted family dentist and ask this question. You will be told the same thing.

4. Why do we lose teeth?

The most common cause of losing teeth is tooth decay. This happens when there is bacteria in the mouth that eats away the enamel of our teeth. A Cavity will form in the tooth and form a gaping hole. This can happen to both children and adults.

5. Are dental X-rays dangerous to our overall health?

Before a tooth extraction is performed, or any kind of dental surgery is performed, it is standard procedure that an x-ray should be taken. However, many people are hesitant to do this because of health reasons. We all know that radiation is harmful to our body. However, we should know that we are being exposed to radiation all the time as part of daily living. The amount of radiation that is being exposed to us when we have dental x-rays is very minimal and it does not do any harm to our overall health.

1. Avoid Tooth Decay

If plaque caused by accumulated harmful bacteria forms into the mouth, it can cause serious tooth decay. When this bacteria is mixed with sugary foods left in the mouth, the tooth decay process begins. The best way to avoid it is to remove the plaque by flossing. Brushing alone cannot remove it.

2. Avoid Gum Problems

The inflammation of your gums is called gingivitis. It is known as the first or primary stage for gum diseases or also known as periodontal disease. Gingivitis can be caused by the accumulation of hardened plaques between the teeth and around the gums. Regular flossing can help to avoid this plaque from collecting.

3. Avoid Bad Breath

Halitosis or bad breath can also be caused by dental plaque. If this plaque is not removed, bacteria can give off a foul smell in your mouth which can be very embarrassing. Furthermore, halitosis can also be caused by tooth decay and other gum diseases which is also caused by plaque. The best thing that you can do to avoid bad breath is by flossing.

4. Avoid Building Up of Tartar

Tartar results from the hardening of plaques that have not been removed over a period of time and have undergone calcification caused by saliva. Brushing alone cannot avoid tartar buildup hence flossing has to be done as well to significantly slow down the development of tartar. To completely remove it, regular dental visits are also recommended.

Now that you know the reasons why you should floss, always keep them in mind. It is important that you care about your dental health as much as you would for your overall health and hygiene. Regular and proper flossing together with brushing can keep your teeth and gums healthy.

Despite the many styles and types of toothbrushes today, the soft bristled type can help you brush your teeth gently and properly while at the same time avoid causing damage like abrasions and scrapes to your gums which could develop into an infection.

Angle and Motion for Brushing

Once you have the right brush and toothpaste for you, it’s time to do the procedure right. Hold the brush at a certain angle that’s against your gums and teeth. Small circular or back and forth motion from one tooth to another is how to do it. Brush your teeth in front of the mirror so you can see if you are doing it the right way.

Pressure, Timing, and Brush Lifespan

When brushing, apply gentle pressure as you go along. The minimum total of the entire procedure should be 2 minutes. If you could spend longer than that, then it’s much better. Also, replace your toothbrush with a new one every few months.

Have you ever heard of someone developing heart disease because they had poor oral hygiene? Probably not. However, this does not mean that it does not happen. Recent studies have shown that poor oral hygiene can actually cause heart disease. Sounds rather far-fetched, huh? Nonetheless, it is true and there are scientific explanations to back it up, of course.

We all have bacteria in our mouth constantly. This is the reason why we need to brush our teeth as well as floss it to make sure that we lessen the bacteria buildup or perhaps try to get rid of it totally. However, when a person has very poor oral hygiene, bacteria will begin to buildup and cause infection and all kinds of gum diseases. These bacteria can actually get into your bloodstream. This is not something that we want in our bloodstream, by the way, as it can actually form clots in the arteries. If the arteries are clogged, this means that blood will have a hard time passing through and that will make your heart work twice as much as it used to. If it does that all the time, you will risk having a heart attack or some form or heart disease that will eventually lead to a heart attack.

It is actually very simple logic, yet many people take it for granted thinking that it is not that serious at all. But then again, one should know that if it involves the heart, it should be taken very seriously because contrary to what many believe, the heart is not just used for loving but it actually is one of our major organs that we simply cannot live without. Our bodies are all somehow connected so that if we take one part for granted, one or two other parts are impacted.

So,  would you rather have a heart disease or would you rather just brush your teeth every after meals, floss, and go to your dentist for regular checkups? I would think that the choice is obvious.
